Sharing Solidarity, Sustenance and Recipes as Communities Shelter in Homes During Troubled Times

The America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL) is sharing both virtual and actual Israeli cuisine as part of a bi-national and nationwide campaign: “Friends In-Deeds,” launching on Sunday, March 29 with a zoom and Facebook livestream. The launch event will include live demonstrations of home-cooked Israeli dishes prepared in real time from kitchens across Israel and the United States. During the live virtual event, AIFL will also announce donations of up to $1000 in Israeli food items that the organization will send to food banks in the United States. The food banks will be recommended by AIFL’s Facebook fans in a crowdsourced effort for individuals to identify critical needs in their own community at this time.

“The United States has always been there for Israel at its time of need,” said AIFL Israel Board Chair Amb. Danny Gillerman. “While we cannot provide a cure, the least we can do is share our Israeli empathy with the people of the United States at their time of need,” Amb Gillerman concludes that “we are pretty confident that our Israeli chocolates and sweets will bring much needed smiles to the faces of children in the United States.”

The launch event this Sunday will include live cooking demonstrations from Chicago Master Chef Lamar Moore, Chef Golan Gurfinkel, executive Chef of the Dalal Center in Neve Tzedek, Tel-Aviv, and Ambassador Lironne Bar-Sade, from the suburbs of Jerusalem, Israel. The event will include home viewing gatherings promoted by organizational friends and partners in more than 15 states across the nation. Virtual hosts joining from around the country will include an NYU college student—in remote classes, a Los Angeles banker working remote with her children and a Presbyterian Minister from San Antonio who just returned from Israel on an AIFL delegation.

The campaign will continue beyond the launch event, and will feature a weekly activity that will be announced by AIFL, and will culminate each week in additional $500 of Israeli goods or services to be donated in the U.S. to a group in need. “This campaign is designed to bridge across the ocean, and showcase the common ground that we have” says Philadelphia based AIFL Board President, Jonathan Barsade. Barsade explains that “rather than capitulate, AIFL is standing up strong, and shouldering its part in the battle against the virus, confident that joint hope, empathy, sympathy and compassion will win the day.”

AIFL’s Friends In-Deeds campaign will continue on a weekly basis for as long as necessary.
